For both recognized and schooling shows, neatness should be the first requisite.
For recognized shows, at Training through Fourth Levels, riders must wear, under penalty of elimination, a tweed or solid color hunting coat with tie, choker, or stock tie; breeches or jodhpurs; boots or jodhpur boots; a dark blue, black, or brown hunt helmet or black or brown derby. A top hat is not appropriate at the lower levels. Approve safety helmets are allowed at all levels. Formal coats with tails are only to be worn at the FEI levels. Riders with long hair must wear hairnets. One whip, no longer than 43.3 inches, including lash, may be carried in Training through Fourth Level classes, except in USEF Championship classes. The carrying of a whip in FEI Level classes is forbidden except for ladies riding sidesaddle.
For schooling shows, breeches or jodhpurs, boots or jodhper boots, a regulation safety helmet or hunt helmet and polo type shirt are appropriate.
For the horse.....
An English type saddle with stirrups is compulsory. For Training through Second Level tests, a plain snaffle type bit and bridle with a regular cavesson, a dropped noseband, a flash noseband, or a crossed noseband made entirely of leather are mandatory and are optional for Third and Fourth Levels. A double bridle is optional for Third and Fourth Levels.
Martingales of any kind, bearing side or running reins, seat covers, and any kind of boots or bandages, and any form of blinder are forbidden. These restrictions also apply to the warm-up areas and other training arenas on the show grounds. However, running martingales, boots, bandages and side reins (solely when lunging) are permitted.
